Twitter Dare Backfires for Patriots Fan

Mike Tetreault made the mistake of daring the social media world.

He was in the stands at a New England Patriots game when he dared to take the field if he received 10,000 re-tweets.

Unfortunately for him the NFL was keeping a watchful eye over all the social media channels.

They sent security to escort him from the game.

But Mr Tetreault wasn’t done.

He declared the security officers attempted to intimidate him by saying, “We know everything about you. We know your whole life.”

Mr Tetreault claimed it was nothing more than a joke, and that he had no intention of taking the field. But his proximity to the astroturf and ease of access was enough to make the ground officials nervous.

Mr Tetreault was outraged and demanded an apology from the NFL.

He released a statement, again via Twitter.

Fans Ignore Mayweather’s Last Fight

Boxing fans gave Floyd Mayweather the send-off he deserves, ignoring his last fight against chump Andre Berto.

With the fight taking place today there were still hundreds tickets still available.

Mayweather hit the media in an eleventh-hour attempt to drum up interest. He declared the challenger a genuine threat, though those with even a passing knowledge of boxing will tell you Berto is a massive underdog.

Berto’s trainer, Virgil Hunter, also stepped in to beat the drum, hinting at ‘personal issues’ between the two fighters.

Both are well-worn avenues for attracting interest. But it appears to be too little too late.

Mayweather’s camp believed the simple fact of this being the champion’s last fight would be enough to fill the stadium. Upon this assumption they didn’t think it mattered who walked out from the opposite corner. Why then, would Mayweather choose an opponent that could actually challenge him?

It appears the boxing public are a little more discerning: Boxing fans go to watch boxing. Mayweather fans go to watch Mayweather. It appears there are more of the former than the latter.

Mayweather won against Berto without much trouble. This win puts him equal with heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano at 49-0.

Ticketmaster were offering hundreds of empty seats in prices between $150 and $1,500.

Olympian Turned Call-Girl Tells All

American track and field superstar Suzy Favor Hamilton has released her autobiography Fast Girl – A Life Spent Running from Madness this week.

In it she describes how she went from celebrating her 20th wedding anniversary with a threesome to being an AUS $800 an hour escort in six months.

Favor Hamilton, now 47, tells how she “devoted myself to sex (and) my need to be unsurpassed in the bedroom …” and how it “replaced the need to be best on the track.”

Favor Hamilton explains that sex was the avenue through which her bipolar disorder manifested itself.

It effectively bought about the end of her athletics career once the media got hold of the facts. She was vilified in the press, her sporting achievements all but overshadowed – even though she represented the US at three Olympic Games.

“I still crave that high,” Hamilton says about the risky-sex that fuelled her mania.

Hamilton says her pre-finish collapse at the Sydney 2000 Olympics began the downward spiral that would finish with her feeling suicidal.

She found a way out through thrill-seeking behaviour and self-medicating.

Her double life was exposed by a reporter from the website The Smoking Gun; which exists to bring to light factual but outrageous stories of public interest.

But upon the birth of her daughter and a course of prescription antidepressants when remembers “suddenly having more energy than I could remember (ever) having. I wanted ot live like I had never lived before.”

Hamilton became a real estate agent, a motivational speaker, and high class hooker.

She became one of the most sought after call girls in Las Vegas and loved every minute of it.

Chess Cheat Busted at Italian Match

Chess image: www.jisc.ac.uk

Italian chess player Arcangelo Ricciardi, ranked 51,366 in the world, has been busted for cheating.

In the Imperia Chess Festival in Italy Ricciardi began his first few matches by beating players ranked much higer than he.

And while this in itself wasn’t enough to draw attention, referees gave him a second look after he sat stone still with a hand under his arm for hours on end, and began blinking in a very strange way.

Jean Coqueraut, the tournament referee told La Stampa newspaper that Ricciardi’s ability to defeat such highly placed opponents were performances “that are impossible.” He was batting his eyelids in the most unnatural way. Then I understood it: He was deciphering signals in Morse code.”

When officials confronted Ricciardi he refused to open his shirt for them.

So he was told to walk through a metal detector. It showed a hidden camera hanging on a chain around Ricciardi’s neck. The camera was attached to a small box hidden beneath his armpit. The box was able to transmit video footage from the camera to an accomplice nearby with access to a chess computer.

The accomplice would then tell Ricciardi what moves to make by using Morse code.

But Riccardi denied any wrongdoing. “It’s only envy,” he said to La Stampa. “I always kenw my potential, but I was never able to express it. It’s all false. I’ve played for 30 years. It’s a genuine passion. But only now, thanks to yoga and self-training I managed to free my mind from tensions and emotions.”

In April, Russian Grand Master Gaioz Niglidze was expelled after he was found to be checking his moves with a smartphone hidden in a toilet rubbish bin.

He attracted attention when he continued to visit the same toilet cubicle for periods longer than 10 minutes at regular intervals.

NRL Furious at Captains’ Snub

NRL officials were fuming when three first-grade captains snubbed the annual finals captains’ call.

Melbourne storm captain Cameron Smith missed the engagement for the second year in a row claiming he has a virus. Instead the club sent Ryan Hinchcliffe, who confirmed the news.

“He’s got a little bit of a virus. He didn’t come to training yesterday and today. He is still crook.” But Hinchcliffe assured Storm fans that the captain will be okay when the finals series kicks off.

Other no-shows were Cowboys captain Jonathon Thurston who sited a slight groin injury for his absence.

The club’s co-captain Matt Scott also begged-off with a neck injury.

Veteran backrower Gavin Cooper was sent to replace them both. He said the long flight for the short event was too much of a disruption to both men’s rehab’ and medicos preferred their star playmakers to rest and heal.

Cooper assured Cowboy fans Thurston and Scott should be right to play in time for the finals.

An NRL spokesman said it was ‘disappointing’ that not all captains were able to attend.

“But we understand that players cannot travel due to illness and injury.

“The clubs involved sent replacement players to ensure they were properly represented at the event.”

Whether the absences are legitimate or calculated snubs the NRL is fast losing credibility among its players, power-brokers, and fans – and this years’ captains call only reinforces that.

Briggs Confronts Klitschko Again!

If emulation is the greatest compliment then boxing is a fan of the UFC.

This week Shannon Briggs took a leaf out of the UFC marketing playbook and continued his haranguing of heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko – causing worldwide media interest.

Briggs, 43 years-old, is due to fight Michael Marrone this weekend. But he made sure there were cameras around when he confronted arch rival Klitschko at a Florida gym – and then posted the footage on social media.

Briggs is desperate for a fight against IBF, WBA, WBO champion Kiltschoko; and has been pursuing this dream for more than a year.

Klitschko, however, has bigger fights, with a defence of his title s against Britain’s Tyson Fury due on October 24.

This latest ‘staged’ run-in only escalates interest in an inevitable showdown.

Briggs has disrupted Klitschko’s press conferences, knocked him off a paddle board, even gatecrashed the champion at a quiet lunch.

TMZ Sport suggests the latest fracas became quite heated off camera, with boxing legend Evander Holyfield having to intervene before fists flew.

White Effusive Over Rousey

Rousey image: https://twitter.com/RondaRousey?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

UFC supremo Dana White is falling over himself praising Ronda Rousey.

In an interview with Yahoo’s Kevin Iole he spoke of Rousey’s willingness to help him out of the UFC 193 jam.

Robbie Lawler’s injured thumb prevented his title defence against Carlos Condit in Melbourne. Suddenly White had an event with no headline fighters.

Rousey was already scheduled to fight on January 2, but White thought he might at least try to convince her to move the bout forward six weeks.

“I swear on my life,” said White to Iole, “I called her today when I thought something might happen and I said to her, ‘Hypothetically speaking …

“She interrupts me and said, ‘I’ll do whatever you need me to do.’

“So I laugh and I’m telling her how much I love that attitude and I’m going on and she stops me again and says, ‘Hey, so what’s up? What do you need?’

“She’s incredible. In 15 years of doing this, I’ve never seen anyone remotely like this woman.”

Fans’ reactions to the announcement of Rousey coming to Australia were off the charts. There, quite literally, is no one with her star power.

However, many are now lamenting the choice of Holm as an opponent. While Holm is a decorated striker, a veteran fighter, and an up-and-comer in the women’s UFC bantamweight division many think it is too early for her to step into the Octagon against the untouchable Ronda Rousey.

Baseball Fan Dies in Freak Accident

Turner field Image: en.wikipedia.org

Major League Baseball, in the US, is in damage control after a fan has fallen to his death at the Turner Field Stadium in Atlanta.

Alex Rodriguez was walking out, in the seventh innings, to take the plate for the Yankees. An as yet unnamed Atlanta Braves fan was yelling at him from a second tier seat. The fan lost his balance, plunging onto the main screen below.

Witnesses say the man was holding onto wires to lean out as far as he could. He fell head first.

Play continued as the incident took place 30 rows back and went unseen by nearly all of the on-field players and officials.

Paramedics rushed to administer first aid. They continued giving him CPR as he was taken to an ambulance which then sped him to hospital. Despite their best efforts he later died.

Fans cordoned off the area and moved young children away from the grisly scene.

Family members were taken to a nearby Braves clubhouse and given counselling.

“None of our family guys got hurt,” said Fredi Gonzaliz, manager of the Atlanta Braves, “other than there were some young children there that got to see stuff that’s not real nice.”

The force of the man’s fall caused the wires and mesh netting to reverberate like a tremor for several seconds.

Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius did see the incident. He was standing on second base following a double when it happened.

“I was thinking about it the whole time,” said Gregorius. “All I can say is my condolences to the family. It was right in front of the camera in the press box. He hit the wires.”

Major League Baseball has said it is reviewing the issue of fan safety. There have been several incidents this season of people being hurt by foul balls and flying bats. This has been the first fan fatality.

Rousey Headlines UFC 193 in Melbourne!

Rousey image: https://twitter.com/RondaRousey?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Social media exploded yesterday. Women’s bantamweight champion ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey was announced as the headliner at UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia. Rousey will defend her championship belt against decorated striker Holly ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ Holm in what is said to be a coup for the hosting venue, Etihad Stadium.

UFC supremo Dana White made the announcement on ESPN’s SportsCentre in New York. Rousey and Hom will take the place of Lawler and Condit at the top of the bill.

“We’ll break all-time attendance record for an MMA event,” said White on Twitter.

Australian MMA fans are euphoric.

“Australia’s an important market for us,” said White to ESPN, “so we’re going to bring her out there in our first real big stadium show. And we know she’ll break the record out there.”

Ticket sellers were inundated at the news. Within seconds of the announcement online ticket sellers were reporting a blowout in sales.

Ronda Rousey is arguably the most marketable fighter in the world. She is without doubt the best.

Holm image: https://twitter.com/_HOLLYHOLM?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Holm image: https://twitter.com/_HOLLYHOLM?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

But Holm is no slouch either. The 33 year-old from New Mexico has a 9-0 record, she has won 9 world boxing titles, and fast climbing the bantamweight ranks.

Her only chance against Rousey, however, is to elude the champion’s Olympic level judo game and keep the fight standing.

Holm lacks the grappling pedigree of Rousey. The champion’s almost patented arm-bar has ended more fights than both of Holm’s fists.

Only Miesha Tate has managed to take Rousey beyond the first round.

In her 12 career wins Rousey ended the last four in: 66 seconds (Sara McMann), 16 seconds (Alexis Davis), 14 seconds (Cat Zingano), and 14 seconds (Bethe Correia).

Most experts are predicting another early night for the champion.

Mason on Report After First Tackle

Mason image: https://twitter.com/mase21?lang=en

He has never been known as the sharpest knife in the draw. This week Manly forward Willie Mason showed just how stupid he is.

In his first game back following a two-week suspension for a shoulder charge Mason sunk his shoulder into the Rooster’s prop Dylan Napa in the very first hit-up of the game.

Napa is no shrinking violet. The 109 kg steamroller was met by three Manly defenders, one of whom was Mason.

Mason didn’t even bother to disguise his shoulder charge.

So with only seven seconds of the game gone the Roosters had their first penalty and Mason was once again on report.

Mason has been an outspoken critic of the new shoulder charge rule.

“I’m embarrassed to be a rugby league player at the moment,” he said after the first two week suspension, “with all the rule changes and everything like that.

“It’s a sad day for rugby league really if you have a look at it.

“I’ve seen bigger hits on the weekend in netball.”

And who can argue?

Rugby league is meant to be a hard-man’s game; getting rid of the shoulder charge from league is like outlawing the body check in ice hockey or the blindside hit in NFL.

I suppose we should be thankful the NRL management don’t run Formula One – everyone would have to drive at the speed limit.

Shoulder charge rule: “Is where a defender, without attempting to tackle, grab or hold the ball-carrier (or any opposing player) using the arms or hands, makes direct physical contact using the shoulder or the upper arm (tucked into the side).

“It will be considered misconduct, if any player affects a tackle in the manner as defined.”
